Retractable Roof of New Marlins Ballpark Nears Completion

MIAMI – Approximately one year away from Opening day in Little Havana, the New Marlins Ballpark is reaching another milestone, the installation of the last major structural piece of steel to be installed on the retractable roof. Media is invited to the Topping Out Ceremony, which will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 9:45 A.M. to celebrate this historic moment. The project remains on-time, on-budget and continues to exceed all local employment participation goals. (Media is advised to arrive no later than 9:30 A.M. and must park on 1694 NW 5 Street, Miami (Parking entrance is at the corner of NW 17 Avenue and NW 5th Street).

The topping out ceremony at the Marlins Ballpark will commemorate the last major structural piece of steel of the retractable roof. The steel piece will be signed by over 800 construction workers as well as Marlins Executives, Miami Dade County officials, and City of Miami officials.

After this steel beam is installed, the remaining infill steel will be added prior to decking the center panel of the retractable roof. The last steel beam weighs approximately 6,845 pounds and will measure approximately 38 feet long. The retractable roof is composed of 11,000 pieces of steel held together by welds and over 115,240 bolts. In all, the retractable roof weighs approximately 7,500 tons.

This 1000-year-old topping out tradition started in Scandinavia when workers would place an evergreen tree on the highest structural element of construction as a symbol of the workers’ ‘respect for nature’s contribution to the building process.’ This tradition continues as a sign of good faith and well wishes for the building and its inhabitants. The traditional topping out tree will be placed on the last piece of steel at the New Marlins Ballpark.

Pitbull and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico Kick Off All-Star Lineup of Saturday Night Concerts

 

 

The Florida Marlins announced today the highly-anticipated return of Baker Concrete “Super Saturdays” at Sun Life Stadium. Miami-born Cuban-American international superstar Pitbull will launch the 2011 Super Saturdays lineup on April 2 followed by Puerto Rico’s Latin Grammy Award-winning salsa music orchestra El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico on April 23.

For the fifth-consecutive season, each of the 11 Saturday home games will be designated as a Super Saturday, consisting of a post-game concert featuring internationally-acclaimed recording artists, pregame activities at the Strike Zone for the entire family, and amazing fan giveaways. The concert and all other activities are free with each ticket purchased for the Marlins game that night; however, fans can enhance their “Super Saturday” experience by purchasing $25 VIP “Pit Passes” which provide on-the-field access for the post-game concert. In addition, the Marlins are featuring a special 16-game Super Saturday ticket plan, which includes discounted pricing on tickets to all 11 Super Saturdays, Opening Night (April 1), Closing Day (Sept. 28) and three additional games.

April 2 – Pitbull

Miami-born Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, a.k.a. Armando Christian Prez, is a chart-topping crossover star who has taken the Billboard Top 10 singles charts by storm with his recent string of hits including “On the Floor” with Jennifer Lopez, “I Like It” with Enrique Iglesias, “Hey Baby” featuring T-Pain, and “Bon Bon.” Pitbull debuted on Lil Jon’s 2002 album Kings of Crunk, after which he released his debut album in 2004 titled M.I.A.M.I. and hit singles “Culo” and “Toma.” Pitbull released his sophomore album El Mariel in 2006, followed by The Boatlift in 2007. In 2009, Pitbull released his fourth album, Pitbull Starring in REBELUTION, which included his highest charting single ever “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and follow-up top-10 hit “Hotel Room Service.” Pitbull released a full-length debut Spanish-language album titled Armando last year and is expected to release his latest album, Planet Pit, sometime in 2011.

April 23 – El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

Led by pianist and musical director, Rafael Ithier, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is one of Puerto Rico’s greatest salsa music orchestras. Four decades after their inception, the 13-piece Latin Grammy Award-winning group continues to inspire dancers with its horn-punctuated Latin rhythms and lush vocal harmonies. Their 1984 album titled Breaking the Ice led to their first Grammy nomination. In 2002, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico celebrated their 40th anniversary with two sold-out concerts at the Ruben Rodrguez Coliseum in Bayamn, Puerto Rico. This celebration spawned a renowned album that was recognized as one of the best of the year. A year later, they received a Grammy for Best Tropical Album. Among other musicians, they are one of the “enduring superstars of the island.”

DIAMOND CLUB SEATS SOLD OUT FOR 2012 SEASON

PREMIUM SEATING AT NEW MARLINS BALLPARK SELLING FAST

 

 MIAMI – The entire Diamond Club seating area at the New Marlins Ballpark is now sold out for the 2012 season; all of the 379 all-inclusive Diamond Club seats, set up right behind home plate, have been sold for the entire 2012 season. Other premium seating in the New Ballpark is also selling quickly. Currently, fewer than 80 of 296 seats in the Dugout Clubs, located behind the first- and third-base lines, remain available for 2012. To date fewer than 20 seats are available in the Championship Suites.

“We are very pleased with ticket sales at the New Ballpark and we’re confident that it will be filled throughout the 2012 season and beyond,” said David Samson, Marlins President. “The South Florida community has responded with enthusiasm since our groundbreaking and we look forward to moving into our permanent home in Miami next season.”

LATEST NEWS ON CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS FOR MARLINS NEW BALLPARK

 

March 1- Marlins released detailed progress of construction at their new ballpark. Reports indicate construction is going as planned and remains on budget. From the Marlins official website:

 

The construction of the New Marlins Ballpark is progressing according to plan;

         The first two of three segments of the Center Retractable roof truss have been de-centered and moved. The last Center truss erection has begun and is scheduled to be de-centered during the month of March. The Center panels are the final and biggest of the three retractable roof panels. The retractable roof is made up of three panels (East, Center and West) that will move independent of each other or in tandem. When in the open position, the East and West retractable roof panels will roll underneath the Center Panel.

         Interior walls are approximately 90% constructed. Final finishes will be continuing throughout the year.

         The exterior curtainwall system is being installed on the West side, with 140 panels installed to date.

         Seat installation began in February along Baseline Reserved Section 1.

         The main scoreboard video panels have been erected. The Right Field Score Board Panel and fascia ribbon boards began installation in February. Including the main Scoreboard, there will be approximately 46 display boards throughout the Ballpark.

         Sports Lights are installed around the bowl.

         The foundations of the four garages are complete. Tilt up walls in the North garages have been erected the five floors poured. Tilt up walls for the South garages are being erected.

MARLINS UNVEIL 2011 PROMOTIONS SCHEDULE

The Marlins have unveiled their 2011 promotions schedule. This season’s promotions schedule features 10 fan giveaways, 11 Super Saturday post-game concerts, two fireworks shows (Opening Night and July 4th), the monthly All-You-Can-Eat Seats, as well as several group and theme nights during the home games scheduled at Sun Life Stadium.

Weekends at the ballpark promise not to disappoint, with festivities beginning Friday home games and continuing throughout Sunday. Every Friday home game will be Jiffy Lube Fiesta Friday and will include Dominando con Los Marlins and a pregame party at the Strike Zone with a live Salsa band. Catch your Florida Marlins playing as Los Marlins and enjoy live music provided by The Marlins Pachanga Band. After the game, don’t miss the fun as the celebration continues with the 10th inning party featuring the Marlins Mermaids, Manatees and Maniacs.

Baker Concrete Super Saturdays return for the fifth consecutive season and will feature post games concerts, as well as pregame autograph sessions with Marlins players and celebrities, meet and greets with Billy the Marlin, Lil’ Billy, the Mermaids and Manatees, live entertainment and activities. Throughout the game fans will get the opportunity to participate in premium giveaways and various in-stadium promotions featured on MarlinsVision.  

Family Sundays will bring the weekend festivities to an end with pregame activities that include Radio Disney 990 AM entertainment, interactive games, bounce houses, radio station broadcasts, and Snapshot Sunday where fans can take pictures with Marlins players, Billy the Marlin and the Mermaids and enjoy a pregame performance from the Marlins  Minnows on the Strike Zone stage.  After the game, fans 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases in Diamond Dash.

MARLINS CARAVAN FOR THE TROOPS 2011

Marlins Caravan for the Troops 2011

Every year the Florida Marlins organization engages in Caravan. The purpose of the Caravan is to not only promote the upcoming season, but also to get the community involved in a good cause. Last year’s Caravan for Earth, centered itself around promoting the “Go Green” movement. This year’s Marlins Caravan for the Troops 2011, was dedicated to both the New Marlins Ballpark and those serving in our armed forces.

The week-long celebration began Monday, February 14, with a visit to the Miami Beach U.S. Coast Guard Station. Marlins players, coaches, executives, Mermaids, Manatees and Billy the Marlin, participated in the day’s festivities. The group, led by Team President David Samson, arrived by boat, took a tour of the base and signed autographs for the troops.

Next on their list was a visit to the New Marlins Ballpark. On Tuesday, media was invited to witness the first seat installed in the ballpark, as well as the first batting practice. After batting practice, the players, led by All-Star Hanley Ramirez, served lunch to construction workers of the new ballpark. The day concluded with interviews from Marlins Executives Jeffrey Loria, David Samson and Larry Beinfest, as well as an update of the construction from Hunt/Moss engineers.

The group resumed the caravan on Thursday with a trip to the Homestead Air Reserve base. Once again Marlins players, coaches, executives, Mermaids, Manatees and Billy the Marlin participated in an autograph session with Airmen, a tour of the base and a 3-inning game of softball against the troops.

Friday was Soldiers Appreciation Day. The Marlins group honored the military personnel at the United States Southern Command in Doral. The day began with an official pregame ceremony followed by lunch, an autograph session and a game of wiffle ball.  

The Caravan concluded on Saturday at the 16th Annual Jiffy Lube FanFest hosted by InterContinental Hotel Miami. The Marlins invited all their fans to Sun Life Stadium for a day of family-friendly activities and games. The event was free to the public and included activities such as autograph sessions with players and coaches, live performances from the Mermaids and Manatees and the opportunity to discuss the new ballpark with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. Fans were also able to purchase single game tickets for the upcoming season, including Opening Night, Super Saturdays, Closing Day, and key series against the Phillies, Mets, Dodgers, Braves, Giants, Angels, and more.

Construction Progress – 9/29/10

The construction of the New Marlins Ballpark hit an exciting milestone as the east retractable roof truss panel that had been sitting on the shoring towers was moved from the west side of the project to the area just behind second base. This will allow the construction team to begin the assembly of the second roof truss panel that will eventually be located on the west side of the operable roof. The retractable roof is made up of three panels (East, Center and West) that will move independent of each other or in tandem. In other developments, the concrete superstructure was completed in the last week and the precast concrete that will support the ballpark seats is nearing completion.  A total of four set of stairs, two ramps and four escalators located behind home plate have already been installed.  The foundations for the two north garages is now 100% complete and the casting bed is now in place to allow the Construction Manager to make significant progress. WASTE MANAGEMENT HELPS THE MARLINS BUILD HOMES FOR HAITI

Moved by the ongoing crisis in Haiti, Waste Management has made a $50,000 donation to the Florida Marlins “Homes for Haiti” program to support the month-long campaign between the baseball team and Food For The Poor to build much-needed housing in Haiti.

 

Waste Management, which has more than 500 workers of Haitian descent in South Florida, rallied immediately after the January 12 earthquake to raise $100,000 in emergency aid for Haiti.  Now the company has joined the Marlins’ effort to build homes in a country where more than one million people have been displaced. 

 

The Waste Management donation will provide ten two-room homes. The goal of the campaign includes raising funds to build a village consisting of 25 two-room houses and the installation of sanitation and water projects. Food For The Poor homes are permanent, sturdy concrete construction with rebar reinforcements, and strong corrugated zinc roofs. The charity is ramping up its capacity for building, and homes are going up in Pierre Payen, Trou Du Nord, Demier, Chastenoye, Delogner, Gros Chaudiere, Mahotiere, Leogane, and Grand Goave.

 

Marlins catcher John Baker, along with members of the Marlins’ front office embarked on the first scouting trip to Haiti on July 6 and 7. During their stay the Marlins toured Cap-Haitien, home of the relief project, along with the Shada Community, a town composed of 3,500 homeless families, some of which will be housed by the Marlins project.

 

The fundraising program will continue throughout the month. The Marlins game against the Houston Astros on August 22 will be sponsored by Waste Management, the leading provider of comprehensive waste and environmental services in North America. About 4,500 Waste Management employees and community partners will be at Sun Life Stadium to see the check donation to Food For The Poor.

 

The public now can also donate to Homes for Haiti by putting on their hard hats to tour the construction site of the New Marlins Ballpark. This innovative front office initiative is part of the “Marlins Ayudan” program and is meant to provide a unique behind-the-scenes experience of the construction site while raising funds for Haiti.  The first ten fans or companies to donate $1,000 or more to Homes for Haiti will receive an exclusive behind the scenes New Marlins Ballpark Tour for two people on Tuesday, August 24 at 6 P.M. and a cocktail party following the tour at the New Sales Headquarters from 7:30 P.M. to 9 P.M. The Florida Marlins together with Hunt/Moss and Populous are proud to announce the New Marlins Ballpark is implementing several green initiatives in order to achieve LEED Silver Certification. 

 

“We are excited to shine light on these important green initiatives,” said Claude Delorme, Florida Marlins Executive VP of Ballpark Development. “Efficient waste management, use of recycled materials and storm water runoff safeguards are some of the key components of our green efforts.”

 

The New Marlins Ballpark construction team has initiated an aggressive waste management recycling program. Currently, more than 90% of the construction waste is being recycled.  Primary items being recycled are: asphalt, cardboard, concrete, metal, steel, paper, plastic and wood, among others. The design of the ballpark has focused on including green initiatives, with a goal to incorporate pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content that will ultimately represent more than 20% of the total material incorporated into the ballpark.  The team has also specified materials harvested and manufactured within 500 miles of the job site to reduce transportation emissions and support the local economy.  As the ballpark progresses, other green project elements will include the use of low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, adhesives, carpets and flooring to improve the indoor air quality in the ballpark.   Additionally, each site office complex conducts independent recycling with the goal to donate any money from this program to a local entity for them to start their own green efforts.

MARLINS DONATED 460 TURKEYS TO FAMILIES IN LITTLE HAVANA

 

 Marlins Kick off the Thanksgiving Holiday with Turkey Distribution to Benefit Families in Need

 

 

The Florida Marlins donated 460 Thanksgiving meals to families in Little Havana. Receiving families were members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami and Abriendo Puertas. Each family received a turkey and fixings for their thanksgiving meal. “We were very excited to host this year’s turkey distribution in Little Havana,” said Angela Smith, Florida Marlins Community Outreach Director. “We hope this event impacted the lives of many families in need.”

 

FL Marlins, Hunt/Moss, A Joint Venture, FarmShare, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, Neighbors 4 Neighbors and Abriendo Puertas were involved in the distribution.
